Yahoo, Inc., in an effort to grab a bigger share of the graphical-display advertising market, will provide its marketing clients with tools to create more personalized advertisements targeting Internet users. Yahoo! will launch a new system, SmartAds, which will allow advertisers to compile ads based on a user's Internet profile, including demographic data such as age and household income. SmartAds will operate on Yahoo!'s network of websites, and the system will be employed for travel-related clients in the beginning, starting with two leading airlines. The market for target-based advertising is estimated to reach $1 billion in 2008.

Press-Enterprise Co. appoints VP of advertising
Press-Enterprise Co. has appointed Ken Nelson as its new vice president of advertising. He will assume his new role in August. Nelson, who is currently vice president of advertising for the Ventura County Star, will replace Sue Barry, who announced her retirement earlier this year. Nelson has also held advertising management positions at the Orange County Register. The Press-Enterprise Co., a subsidiary of Belo Corp., provides news and information to inland areas of Southern California. The organization operates several newspapers, magazines, and websites. Belo Corp., based in Dallas, is one of America's largest media companies, with annual revenues of $1.6 billion and around 7,100 employees.
Cookhouse BBQ and Colangelo to receive advertising award
The Cookhouse BBQ restaurant and Colangelo, its ad agency, will receive the "Hot Wing Survival Pack" as the winners of AdPack USA's national tissue-pack marketing design contest. The Colangelo creative team will be presented with the world's largest tissue pack, a certificate, and a cash prize for their work submitted to AdPack USA's Tissue Tactics contest. This year's contest asked marketing professionals to design advertising campaigns using tissue packs as canvases. AdPack USA is a marketing company that specializes in intercept marketing and place-based advertising.
Pittsburgh advertising agency wins Times Square ad space
Sterling Advertising Company, a Pittsburgh-based agency focusing on local advertising, was awarded a free two-day Times Square ad in an online contest organized by Dell. In the contest, Dell Small Business encouraged small business owners to express why "your business deserves an ad in Times Square." Sterling Advertising Company, a month-old advertising agency, was founded by Claire Devereux Thompson, who earlier worked as an advertising sales representative.
