Depending on the advertising career you choose, there can be several different routes to secure a position as a salesperson. Many companies choose people without giving consideration to there educational background, but rather focus on their past performance in sales with other companies. To clarify, you may have been an excellent sales or customer service rep for a company and this experience will define your qualifications during your application process within in advertising industry.

Starting an advertising career will also challenge you to focus on what exactly you want to sell as a product. For example you may want to focus on newspaper advertising sales, radio advertising sales, or television advertising sales to start out with. A sales and marketing degree from a technical college can help obtain an advertising sales position with a larger company, though as mentioned before is not a necessity, but training within the field will help you understand the inner working of the advertising industry . The more you know of the industry the easier it is to obtain a position.

Most of your success will come from hard work and patience. People usually have to work their way up if they want the high paying advertising position. The best advice is an old saying that ''everybody is selling something'' weather it be a salesman or a factory laborer. To obtain any position within any industry you must first ''sell yourself''. With that being said getting started in and advertising career is just like anything else in that you need to be likeable and influence others to like you. This starts from day one and first impressions will always be one of the most important factors of the outcome of the sales process. Your first impression to your potential employer is most important, as is your first impression to you potential clients.
