You have decided on a career in the advertising industry, so now what? The advertising industry is a gigantic industry that employees many different people with many different career titles. From the production and creative department to the sales and business departments. Every type is employed under one roof. Each advertising medium has four our more departments (creative, sales, production, and media) they also have business managers that run the day to day business operations; each department needs employees to fill the positions. Then you have the advertising agencies that employee even more employees with additional departments other than the creative, sales, production and media they also employee a traffic department, and in many cases a research department.
Advertising consists of many different promotional vehicles used to promote products. Television, radio, newspaper, outdoor, direct mail and internet are to name a few. Producing brand awareness and selling a product takes allot of team work and the study of human nature in order to grab the potential consumers’ attention and persuade them to purchase the product.
Most people starting out in the advertising industry may be required to hold a bachelor's degree with emphasis in advertising. Although there are still positions within the industry that do not need a degree but would require more experience. Bachelor's degrees are not required for entry-level positions in the sales department, but assistant art directors usually will need at least a 2-year degree from an art or design school but assistant copywriters do not need a degree although obtaining one helps to develop the superior communication skills and abilities required for this job. With many entry-level positions in the industry it is career to get started in but if you want to advance you must need education and experience to move up the ladder.
