The target audience for an advertising campaign is the audience or consumers most likely to purchase the product or hire your services you are advertising.
In order to reach your target audience (this is a difficult task in advertising because of the lack of information about what the consumers prefer). You must first identify your target audience who is most likely to purchase your product or hire your services. The more information you have, the better job you can do establishing who you target audience is and how you can reach them.
To identify your target audience first you must take a look at the customers you currently have. To examine your current customers ask yourself these questions. Who is your best customer, this can be the customers that are most profitable or customers that frequently come in. Which group of customers creates the majority of your business? What do all these customers have in common? Once you have these customers identified, you will know who you want to draw in to your company.
Now take it a step further segment your customers using demographics and psychographics. Demographic information categorizes customers into categories like age, location, occupation, gender and income.
Psychographic factors, define customers based on their interests or hobbies, like people who collect coins or people who scuba dive. Questions to answer about your customers include: What is the average age of your customers? Are they primarily female or male? Where do they live in the suburbs, out of town or in the city? What is their education level? What kind of income do they make?
Knowing these answers helps you determine a more specific customer. Like the soccer mom with a middle class income, a high school kid that lives within four blocks etc. Now bulk your customers into groups that bring in the most profit, this is your target audience that you want to advertise to , you may have more than one work them all into your advertising campaign.
