Understanding Television as an advertising medium

In order to obtain a position in the advertising television industry you must understand television as an advertising medium. As with many other advertising mediums television is no different. Television reaches a large audience usually farther than your advertising campaign needs to reach and much farther than your local newspaper. The broadcast signal covers what is called A.D.I., which stands for ''Area of Dominant Influence,'' which means the area the television station penetrates the most.

Some of the advantages that television has over other advertising mediums are that television can give a product or service almost instant validity and good standing in the consumers mind. In television advertising it is easier to reach a targeted audience such as kids during cartoons and farmers during the agricultural reports. Television advertising can offer the greatest possibility for creative advertising, it is possible to take your audience anywhere, and it has the widest creativity scope of any other advertising medium out there. Television advertising is easier to target your audience than it is with radio due to the larger segmented audience, fewer television stations versus radio stations to be advertising on.

Disadvantages that the television advertising medium has includes the price per advertisement, with radio and newspaper the rates are flat but with television advertising prices are based on number of viewers, during prime time advertising is more expensive. When placing an advertisement on television you must produce a commercial which may become very expensive, in order to produce a commercial you must hire a camera crew to see the commercial through production. When creating your television advertisement you must be creative, more creative than the other advertisements on the television. The advertisement is competing with what is going on at that time within the consumers’ living room, many times if a televisions advertisement is not creative enough to grab the attention of the consumer they will get up and or be distracted by something going on around them.



As with any career you must know the industry you are going into, research the industry make sure you know what you’re getting into. Remember the more you know about the industry the better you will do and the more attractive you are as an employee to the industry.
