An advertising account executive holds a job that includes a lot of duties, along with a wide variety of responsibilities. Below, I will discuss what it takes to be an advertising account executive and what the future holds for advertising account executives within the communications sector.

Having been in the communications field for quite a few years now, I have worked closely with other journalists, a variety of publicists, and many advertising professionals. A few of my close friends are even starting out in entry-level advertising account executive positions, hoping to work their way up to senior positions.

An advertising account executive works with clients and his or her advertising agency. The advertising account executive needs to coordinate campaigns for clients and usually reports to an advertising manager. The advertising account executive usually serves as the “link” between the client and the agency and has to coordinate all the details of the relationship.

According to Salary.com, the median base salary for advertising account executives is $64,190. An advertising account executive must have a bachelor’s degree, but those with master’s degrees are preferred by larger advertising agencies. Master’s degrees in majors within business administration are highly valued. Having at least three years of experience is generally necessary as well if one will be dealing with a lot of sales in the advertising industry. Organization and personableness are also good qualities.

Some Advertising Account Executive Duties
  • Talking about products with clients and making sure everything is in order.
  • Setting up and scheduling meetings between clients and the agency
  • Delegating work to advertising agents and maintaining relationships with contacts
  • Discussing marketing strategies and addressing media marketing options
  • Communicating effectively as a go-between for the client and the advertising agency and working closely with media specialists
  • Overseeing advertising campaigns
  • Helping to develop creative solutions for clients
  • Meeting deadlines
  • Managing financial elements of campaigns and writing reports
  • Obtaining new business by attracting new clients and keeping present clients happy
  • Ensuring accounts are doing well and making profits for the advertising agency
  • Overseeing advertising staff
  • Coming up with ideas for campaigns and ensuring all tasks are completed
What Kind of Training Does an Advertising Account Executive Need?

An advertising account executive needs to have experience in advertising and sales as well as social skills. It also helps to be knowledgeable about business administration and market research. Internships are a great way to get one’s foot in the door as an advertising account executive.

Advertising firms sometimes may require or offer training programs for advertising account executives. Advancement is possible in the industry as one can move into a senior advertising account executive position. Small advertising firms focus on more experienced account executives.

What Does the Future Hold for Advertising Account Executives?

Advertising account executives are in a competitive field, so even though there is room for growth, an advertising account executive needs to be at the top of his or her game. Long hours are usually part of the deal, especially for entry-level executives.

The advertising industry is a busy one, but the benefits can be rewarding. A senior-level account executive can make a salary of around $90,000 at a top company. Dinner meetings and media events may be in the cards as well. Advertising account executives also usually get retirement benefits, along with health insurance options.
