Advertising managers may do a multitude of tasks. They will create the work they want to place into the advertising that they will be using. Many of these advertising managers work for agencies. The number of advertising agencies was approximately 48,000 in 2006. There are also many international agencies that receive much of their income from advertising abroad.
What Are the Responsibilities of Advertising Managers?
Jobs at advertising agencies may be involved in a specialized market. They may engage in only the outdoor type of advertising, for example. This would include billboards and other displays. There may be promotions that they have conceived that are placed in public areas where they will be seen by many people such as train stations, bus stations, subways, and airports.
Advertising account managers will come up with gimmicks to get the product they are promoting noticed. They may use online promotions such as giving away a free gift from a company they are promoting. Using something to get people’s interest is one of the oldest forms of advertising. They may sponsor a contest with a nice prize, for example. There are many ways that advertising managers will choose to promote their products or services.
The advertising managers that work in advertising agency jobs will spend part of their time working on the concepts for promotions and the other part of the time actually promoting the product. The sales go up when an advertiser has a good idea and can use it to get the attention from consumers.
Many companies will contract out for a service that can create the campaigns they need to generate interest in their products. They may ask for bids from several advertising agencies for their project. The winner of the bid will work to put together an advertisement for the company that works to generate interest and create more sales for the company.
Entry-level advertising jobs will normally be performed under the supervision of an advertising associate who will help to train the assistant. Another type of advertising account manager might work with the public to promote his or her clients and head off any unfavorable publicity.
For instance, a company may need to promote a positive image within the community. If the image has been unfavorable in the past, the work the advertising manager would be responsible for would be to change this image. If the company is just little known, the object is to let the public know more about it and promote the company in the best light possible.
This may sound like public relations, but recently companies have been trying to get business and keep it, so they are adding these services to their advertising business. Public relations is not far from advertising because promoting a person will generate traffic, and by generating traffic you are generating income. Most people who are in the public view are there for the income they earn.
The Work Environment for Advertising Managers
The advertising manager normally works in an office. Advertising managers should expect to work long hours that are not typical for office work, though. They may have to be available in the evening or on the weekend. Their clients may be engaged during normal working hours, and so other hours may be the only time they have free to work with an advertising manager.
This is by no means a part-time job, but the upbeat atmosphere may be what you like in a working environment. If so, this position may be right for you. That said, there are many people who find a fast-paced business to be stressful. The ability to work on a schedule which may end up being tight most of the time is often more than some people can handle.
There are advertising manager jobs all over the country, but the highest percentage are in the larger cities and states. California and New York are two states that have a higher number of advertising managers than elsewhere in the nation. So if you are really serious about making this your career move, you may have to relocate.
