About The Role
Working as a one-person sales team and reporting to the Director of Outreach and Engagement, the advertising sales specialist is responsible for generating revenue for NCSL by selling across several platforms, including exhibit space at the NCSL Legislative Summit (annual meeting), advertising in NCSL’s State Legislatures Magazine, web advertising on NCSL.org and newsletter advertising. This salesperson prospects and interacts with well-known companies across the nation and is critically important to impacting NCSL’s bottom line.
What You'll Do
Work independently to bring in revenue through selling advertising and exhibitor space.
Prospect, develop and cultivate business relationships with new advertisers and exhibitors. This involves performing market research, identifying potential new customers, finding contacts, cold-calling and employing effective sales skills to motivate new companies to purchase advertising and/or exhibitor space from NCSL.
Develop content for sales presentations.
Maintain and further develop business relationships with existing advertisers and exhibitors.
Collaborate with the NCSL meetings team to coordinate and execute the Legislative Summit Exhibit Hall.
Collaborate with the NCSL digital and magazine team to understand, strategize and book available web and print magazine advertising space.
Collaborate closely with NCSL Foundation for State Legislatures staff to understand how Foundation sponsors are approached for advertising/exhibitor sales opportunities.
Provide customers with technical information and work to ensure appropriate materials, such as artwork, are received on-time and according to NCSL’s specifications.
Deliver advertising proofs to customers for approval.
Manage client information and overall prospecting activities using NCSL’s customer management system.
Produce weekly and monthly call and sales reports.
Identify new revenue generating opportunities and propose products to sell.
Consistently meet or exceed call requirements and advertising/exhibitor sales targets.
Attend communications team meetings and fulfill administrative tasks as necessary.
Share Your Knowledge
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position is a mostly performed in an office environment, on or off-site, with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Team members utilize standard office equipment such as copy machines, laptops, printers, scanners, and smartphones. Expand your horizons with travel opportunities to network with lawmakers and staff across the country (includes overnights and weekends by airplane). Qualifications For Sucess
Bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising, business or a related field required.
Five years of relevant and progressive work experience in advertising sales.
Three years’ experience in selling exhibit space, with a proven track record of increasing sales annually.
Proven track record of generating sales in print, digital and/or other forms of advertising with demonstrated ability to increase sales annually.
Experience in state government, legislative institutions or a membership-based organization is a plus.
Strong business development, project management and customer service focus.
Experience managing the full sales process, from prospecting and uncovering new potential exhibitors and advertisers to closing sales, completing contracts and ensuring client satisfaction.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to easily establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships.
Individually driven to continually exceed target revenue expectations.
Experience working with content management systems (e.g.., Salesforce).
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Commitment to continuous improvement, ongoing professional development and a resilience for a dynamic changing work environment.
Familiarity with NCSL's or related non-profit organization's goals and practices.
Experience working in bipartisan organizations preferred; ability to demonstrate understanding of the importance of being nonpartisan a must.
Capacity and willingness to take on multiple and differing responsibilities.
Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, meet deadlines and sales targets.
Sound judgment in communicating information in a neutral, non-partisan manner.
A basic understanding and appreciation of representative democracy.
Must be a Colorado resident or willing to relocate.
